Sportswear chain JD Sports has said that stored data belonging to 10 million customers could be at risk after being hit by a cyber attack.

The company said the information "that could be accessed by the hackers included names, addresses, email accounts, phone numbers, order details and the last four digits of bank cards."

The group said affected data was limited. It said it did not have full payment card details and did not believe account passwords were accessed by the hackers.

The company said it was working with "leading cyber-security experts" and with the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) in its response to the incident.

A number of UK companies have come under cyberattacks in recent days, with the Royal Mail earlier this month falling victim to a ransomware attack that halted post and parcel deliveries overseas.

In December, the Guardian newspaper was also the target of a suspected ransomware attack.

A spokesperson for the ICO confirmed that it was aware of the attack and was assessing the information provided by JD Sports.
