Donald Trump will be allowed back on Facebook and Instagram after Meta announced it would end a two-year suspension of his accounts.

The public needs to be able to hear what their politicians are saying, Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, said in a statement.

The then US President was suspended indefinitely from Facebook and Instagram following the Capitol riots in 2021.

Mr Clegg said Meta had acted after Mr Trump praised those involved in the violence in the Capitol.

The suspension was an extraordinary decision taken in extraordinary circumstances, he said.

They said a review has now found that Mr Trump's accounts no longer represent a serious risk to public safety.

But because of Mr Trump's past "violations", he now faces heavy penalties for any future offences.

The Meta Oversight Board - a body set up to review moderation decisions - said the decision to reinstate Mr Trump on its platforms "sat with Meta alone - the board had no role in the decision".

The board previously told Meta that Mr Trump's suspension needed to be reconsidered.

It urged Meta to be transparent and provide additional information about new policies covering public data so it can review their implementation.
